Tui Na

Also known as Chinese Massage Therapy, Tui na is a therapeutic massage based alongside the principles of Chinese Medicine. In China it is of equal importance as Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, and is often the first treatment for children and infants. It is as over 3,000 years old and is believed to be the grandmother of many types of massage and bodywork today, from Shiatsu to osteopathy.

Tui na treats illness of an internal nature as well as musculoskeletal ailments. It uses the same principles, meridians and points as acupuncture, but uses hands and fingers rather than needles. It has many of the same benefits as acupuncture, but can be used when acupuncture is not suitable; for example children, or if someone does not like needles. In general Tui na is gentler and has a less lasting effect on imbalances than acupuncture, but some people find they respond better to Tui na. Many people find Tui Na deeply relaxing and enjoyable. Tara is also a trained acupuncturist and can combine acupuncture and Tui Na together if necessary.

What can it treat?

What happens during a treatment?
A full consultation is taken, as with acupuncture. You will be asked questions about your main complaint as well as about your lifestyle, diet, emotions and medical history. For the first treatment this usually takes about 25 minutes. After that Tara makes a diagnosis and treatment plan according to the principles of Chinese Medicine, and then treatment begins. Tui Na is often performed through a cloth, or with the patient fully clothed. Tara also uses Chinese techniques such as Gua Sha, cupping or moxibustion as appropriate. She also uses some Chinese medicinal oils direct on the skin where appropriate.
