Reflexology is one of the oldest forms of complementary therapy, and thought to have originated in China over 5,000 years ago.
According to the modern reflexology theory, most of the body parts and organs are mapped out on the soles of feet (or the palms of hands) known as reflex areas/points, and it is believed to work on the whole body by applying pressure with the thumbs to the reflex areas during the session.
While there is no clear scientific evidence showing how reflexology points are linked to other parts of the body, a newer “nerve impulse theory” suggests that the benefits of this treatment could be due to modulation of the autonomic nervous system, which regulates unconscious body processes such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion.
Reflexology is deeply relaxing, and highly recommended for people with busy lifestyles for its balancing effects. It helps to reduce stress, ground, clear the mind, and strengthen the mind-body-spirit connection. It can also be a wonderful tool for aiding conception and supporting a healthy pregnancy (from 13 weeks onwards only).
